Understanding a German payslip

An anonymous worked example explains each deduction and the known personal facts a newcomer needs.

A fictional example without uploads

At regular monthly gross €4,000, class I, North Rhine-Westphalia, childless after the 23rd-birthday month and additional health rate 2.9%, the 2026 reference has monthly wage tax €524.50, pension €372, unemployment €52, health €350 and care €96. Without solidarity or church withholding, take-home is €2,605.50. These are explicit fictional assumptions, not a prediction for every employee on this salary.

Where your known payroll facts come from

Your payslip or ELStAM payroll details show tax class, ZKF and any registered personal allowance. Your health fund has its individual additional contribution. We maintain ordinary statutory values, so you do not need to research ceilings or the basic allowance. Care parent status differs from the number of children currently below 25. If a fact is unknown, do not infer entitlement from an example.

English does not imply a legal status

Choosing English does not establish residence, treaty relief or insurance eligibility. We neither recommend tax classes nor verify family evidence. No tax ID, document upload or exact address is required. Return to the calculator to adjust known facts; clarify unknown status questions with the relevant authority or payroll provider. Final annual income tax after filing may differ from withholding.
