Ordinary Ounces, Troy Ounces and Pounds

Distinguish ordinary and troy mass, convert pounds and ounces together and avoid confusing fluid ounces with weight.

Ordinary pounds and ounces belong together

In the ordinary avoirdupois system, one pound is exactly 0.45359237 kg and consists of 16 ordinary ounces. Dividing gives exactly 28.349523125 g per ordinary ounce. A mixed entry of 10 lb 8 oz means 10.5 ordinary pounds and converts to 4.762719885 kg before display rounding. Type both units instead of using a decimal point to stand in for an ounce count.

A troy ounce is a different mass

A troy ounce is exactly 31.1034768 g, about 9.714% larger than an ordinary ounce. It uses 480 grains, whereas an ordinary ounce uses 437.5 grains. Select Troy ounces explicitly or type troy oz. The converter does not mix troy and ordinary components in one mixed entry. The definitions are useful mathematical facts, not a valuation, purity assessment or recommendation about precious metals.

Fluid ounces are volume, not mass

A label saying fl oz describes a volume. Converting that volume into grams requires the substance and an appropriate density, which can depend on conditions. This tool does not provide a hidden water assumption or ingredient lookup, and therefore rejects fluid ounces. Ordinary oz and troy oz are mass units. If the source does not make its meaning clear, confirm the original label before choosing a unit.

Stone and the three meanings of ton

One stone is 14 ordinary pounds, so 12 st 7 lb means 175 lb or 79.37866475 kg. A metric tonne is 1,000 kg; a US short ton is 2,000 lb; a UK long ton is 2,240 lb. These are not interchangeable. Choose a named option rather than entering ton alone. Results provide arithmetic only and do not certify a weighing device, shipping classification, commercial label or medical use.
