Length and Weight Converter

Convert one measurement or a whole list. Type familiar units directly, check how they were read, and copy the result without losing units or row positions.

Convert a measurement

Type a number or units: 5 ft 10 in, 5′10″ or 1 1/2 in. A decimal point is not a feet/inches separator.

Example loaded: 177.8 centimeters. Replace it with your own measurement.

Clear removes entries and results. Examples are labeled and can be loaded again. Calculations stay in this browser.

Your conversion

Converted measurement

70 in

Read as

177.8 cm

Practical units

5 ft 10 in (nearest 1/8 in); 5.83333 decimal ft; 70 total in

Rounding difference

5 ft 10 in; 0 mm difference from the unrounded measurement.

Row audit

Convert a list to review every original row, including blank lines and errors.

Calculation basis

1 cm = 0.01 m; 1 in = 0.0254 m. Convert through the meter using source factor ÷ target factor. Display rounded to 6 significant digits; internal value stays unrounded.

Length; centimeters to inches; 6 significant digits; practical inches rounded to 1/8 inch. Fixed international definitions, not measurement accuracy, health advice or engineering approval.

Check the interpreted units and rounding. For a list, fix every row error before copying the results column back beside your original data.

How it works

Use exact factors, then round the display

Each unit has a fixed definition in meters or kilograms. We multiply by the source factor and divide by the destination factor, keeping the internal quantity unrounded. For example, one inch is exactly 2.54 centimeters and one ordinary pound is exactly 0.45359237 kilograms. Choose 3–12 significant digits for the displayed result; more digits do not improve the precision of your original measurement.

Check the units we read

A bare number uses From unit. If you type units, such as 5 ft 10 in or 10 lb 8 oz, the Read as line identifies them explicitly. Length and mass stay separate: a length entered under Mass produces an error, not a plausible weight. Use lowercase unit symbols, decimal points and correctly grouped thousands. A leading minus applies to the entire measurement; arithmetic expressions are not accepted.

Keep spreadsheet rows together

Choose Convert a list and paste one measurement per line. Blank lines keep their original positions and an invalid row stays visible with its own error. Fix all nonblank errors before copying a results column beside the original data. The full table and audit CSV retain original text, interpretations, units and errors, so you can check the conversion instead of guessing which row moved.

Common questions

Why is 5.10 feet different from 5 feet 10 inches?

5.10 feet means 5.1 decimal feet. Its decimal part is 0.1 × 12 = 1.2 inches, so it equals 155.448 cm. In contrast, 5 ft 10 in equals 70 inches or 177.8 cm. Type feet and inches explicitly when you mean two units; a decimal point is not a separator between them.

Is an ounce ordinary, troy or fluid?

Ordinary ounces and pounds use the avoirdupois system: 16 ounces make one pound. One ordinary ounce is exactly 28.349523125 g. A troy ounce is separately defined as 31.1034768 g. Fluid ounces measure volume and cannot become mass without additional density information, so this converter rejects them rather than guessing.

How do I round to the nearest eighth of an inch?

Under Length, choose Nearest 1/8 inch. The practical result uses that fraction and reports its signed difference from the unrounded quantity in millimeters. A positive difference means the rounded value is larger; a negative difference means smaller. This is a display choice, not a statement about a material tolerance or whether a part will fit.

Are my measurements stored or uploaded?

The conversion, copy and CSV creation run in this browser. Measurement entries are not saved in browser storage or included in the page address. Copy and download are explicit actions you control. Loading the website still involves its hosting provider; the privacy notice explains that separate request processing.

Why is Copy results column blocked until I fix errors?

A missing or invalid result could be pasted against the wrong original row. Fix each nonblank error first, then the numeric results column preserves all blank positions. Copy full table and Download audit CSV remain available to inspect an error report; they include original line numbers and error messages.

Scope and limitations

For ordinary length and mass arithmetic only. Not medical, structural, cadastral, ingredient-density or certified commercial-weighing advice. Uses the international foot and explicit ordinary/troy mass definitions. Exact factors do not make a rounded result or the original measurement exact.
